Violin

Violin, viola, and cello were first made in the early 16th century, in Italy. The two earliest violin makers in recorded history are both from northern Italy: Andre Amati from Cremona and Gasparo di Bertolotti from Salon (Gasparo di Salon). Since their invention, instruments in the violin family have seen a number of changes. The overall pattern for the instrument was set in the 17th century by luthiers like the prolific Amati family, Jakob Stainer of the Tyrol, and Antonio Stradivari, with many makers at the time and since following their templates.

The violin quickly became very popular, both among street-musicians and the nobility. Whether sounding sweet or sad, playful or somber, the violin’s ability to evoke almost any mood has helped take it all the way to the top and is often referred to as the “concertmaster“.
